THE FORGOTTEN CHILDREN OF TIBET AND NEPAL

After giving aid to different schools & orphanages in different parts of India we arrived in

Orissa to help the Tibetan refugee settlement.

While the world quietly looks upon the injustices & suffering done to Tibetan people I

and my society have pledged to help those living in exile by improving their quality of life.

We provided school fees for children at the Tibetan Children Village in Dharamsala to

providing a computer, telephone connection, cultural facility in Orissa. We are also

providing essentials like a water well and a school bus. In Orissa due to the heavy flooding

there are a variety of diseases including a wide spread of malaria, and the need of simple

window screens to keep the mosquitos away is apparent. Due to the location of the

Tibetan camps the children that walk to school are subject to being attacked by the many

species of snakes and other bigger animals such as bears and tigers that live in these wild

jungles. The thick forests are reminiscing to those in Africa. The already poor roads,

which worsen with the heavy rain falls make it harder to deliver aid. This also brings

about damage to the mud homes. In spite of these difficulties the Tibetan refugees

are determined to make good with what they have. Their determination has started new

schools and other facilities to foster & preserve their culture & arts. However the

facilities like nursery schools are in danger of closing due to the lack of funding. Apart

from the school fees this mission also bought very much needed educational supplies, the

appreciation of which was shown by the offering of many satin scarves that went around

our members necks(Tseden Dhogonpa).

The highlight of our visit cam when we had a special meeting with his Holiness, The

Dalai Lama, who was appraised of our efforts to help the five camps in Orissa and the

Tibetan children's Village in Dharamsala. He was very grateful and pleased that we had

come all the way from Canada to show our compassion fore these Tibetans living in exile

and trying to improve their quality of life.

The Gumpa Centre – Kathmandu, Nepal

The For love of Children Society of Alberta got involved to help build a centre about 4 years ago, to help homeless

Nepalese and Tibetan children.   This Centre provides not only a home for the children, but food, educational supplies and medical aid.

The centre is located outside the city limits – as land is cheaper there (donated).  The road was washed out from the rains,

so the van was parked some distance from the Centre and we hiked up to the centre.

This brought the reality of how difficult it is to bring building supplies and other supplies to the Centre.  It became very clear to the

volunteers that bringing supplies to build the Centre was an accomplishment in itself.

The children live at the Centre and attend a nearby school. They receive spiritual teaching by the Toshi Lama.

This Centre is monitored by our local agent, Binod. We are currently building a Monastery on the top of the

Centre for spiritual teaching for the children and the population in the vicinity.

We recognize that with the completion of the Monastery, the Centre will become more self sufficient.

Shree Hachowk School – Kathmandu, Nepal

he Society also supports the Shree Hachowk School – which is also on the road to the Gumpa Centre.

This school currently has 350 students, with 9 regular teachers and 3 volunteer teachers.  Since our visit in

2003, the Society has built a retaining wall around the school to prevent damage due to landslides. New classrooms have

been built, apart from the much needed repairs.  We have also helped with school supplies, school fees and uniforms.

One of the Society goals is to encourage the areas we help out to become more self sufficient.  Since our help, the

Shree Hachowk School has been able to raise funds locally and now, even the local

Government is matching donations raised locally and abroad.

Thanka Painting School – Bhaktapur, Nepal

The Society supports the Thanka Painting School in Bhaktapur, Nepal.  We brought good quality canvas;

artists paint brushes, and paints.  Children living on the streets can come here to learn skills to paint

Buddha art and sell their paintings to help provide funds to sustain their daily living and pay for their education.

There are approximately 25 to 30 students (that live around the city) and are able to attend school for free.
